Nina ross
An Isle of Wight local, Nina originally sang classically then re-trained with Swedish jazz folk vocalist Emilia Martensson. She has sung with a variety of musicians in London and Slovenia, including performing at the Vortex and Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club, London.
After previous careers in theatre and film she decided to fulfil her lifelong passion for singing. Running through Nina’s music is her love of nature and the written word and her fascination with the ways in which we express emotion. The subtle mix underlying complex feelings and how we connect with one another through them.
Nina takes inspiration from a variety of music genres enjoying art pop, indie, electronica, jazz, folk and classical. Her influences include: Beth Gibbons, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Norma Winstone.
For Nina music has always served as a connection to self and to others. A sense of freedom and release. These elements inform her repertoire. With storytelling at the forefront Nina sings with a purity of sound and a touch of folk. She looks to thread between the shifting lines of light and dark, hope and melancholy, joy and sorrow.
Enjoy a relaxed approach as Nina delivers a set of known and less well-known songs from the American Songbook such as Nature Boy, Skylark, The Peacocks and Wild is the Wind, along with a jazz approach to contemporary songs by Portishead, David Bowie and Joni Mitchell.
